Henry Jenkins - Participatory Culture

  • The future is in collective intelligence
  • Media convergence is culture, not technology
  • It's shaped by corporations and teens, what they want, when they want it.
  • It's not 'whether' Wikipedia is accurate, it's 'when will' it be accurate, because it is a collective intelligence.
  • Teenagers expect to find everything on the internet, and if they don't, they search until they find it illegally.
  • Companies want to be available on all media platforms (i.e facebook)
  • Everyone is a producer of media (collective intelligence/community)
  • Gets rid of geographical limits
What do you think has been the biggest advancement in technology in your generation and why?
The internet. It links people together (social networking sites) more than email did. Products can advertise to the world on it. Musicians can promote themselves and their latest songs on youtube and myspace. Before, we had to hear it on the radio and on TV, and wait to buy the CD (or tape!).
