Jeff Howe's definition of crowdsourcing is: "Crowdsourcing is the act of taking a job traditionally performed by a designated employee and outsourcing it to an undefined, generally large group of people in the form of an open call."
The video states that having many good freelancers working together and having managed focused crowds.
Crowds form on the internet through shared interest, yes things like facebook are a online crowd as people gather together to share pictures, ideas and many other things.
The crucial terms of crowdsourcing are "open call and undefined" They are crucial because the person who seems most qualified to the job might not be the best for it.
Cheap digital camera's and the internet
Crowdsourcing works by leaving an open task for anybody to try and then going over the results and selecting the best ones or just allowing anybody to contribute to the final project such as Swarmsketch.
I think it is quite effective as long as the people who started the task or "gatekeeper" are open to many ideas. However I think that it doesn't always bring out the best results for example on Swarmsketch the drawing are terrible
