Crowdsourcing

Jeff Howe's definition of crowdsourcing is: "Crowdsourcing is the act of taking a job traditionally performed by a designated employee and outsourcing it to an undefined, generally large group of people in the form of an open call."
The video states that having many good freelancers working together and having managed focused crowds.

Crowds form on the internet through shared interest, yes things like facebook are a online crowd as people gather together to share pictures, ideas and many other things.
The crucial terms of crowdsourcing are "open call and undefined" They are crucial because the person who seems most qualified to the job might not be the best for it.
Cheap digital camera's and the internet

Crowdsourcing works by leaving an open task for anybody to try and then going over the results and selecting the best ones or just allowing anybody to contribute to the final project such as Swarmsketch.
I think it is quite effective as long as the people who started the task or "gatekeeper" are open to many ideas. However I think that it doesn't always bring out the best results for example on Swarmsketch the drawing are terrible

Crowd Sourcing

Jeff Howe's Definition of Crowd Sourcing:

"Crowd-sourcing is the act of taking a job traditionally performed by a designated employee and outsourcing it to an undefined, generally large group of people in the form of an open call."

The Key to successful crowd-sourcing?
Managed Focused Crowds.

Why do "crowds" form on the internet? Are you part of an online crowd- if so which?
Shared interests and shared passions
Facebook
Wikipedia

What are the crucial terms in Jeff Howes idea of crowd-sourcing? why is this crucial?
1. Open call
2. Undefined
Why? The person you think might be best for the job, might not be, so others can share their ideas and createsomething better.

Name two reasons why this type of crowd-sourcing is now possible?
Digital Camera
Photo  Editing Software
Internet

Swarmsketch
Someone starts a sketch, every user has a line added which then helps create make the drawing

Linkin Park:Featuring you

Genius Rocket
A person can come to the company say what they need and the company can give a list of connections that can help them with their idea.

how effective do you believe it to be?
well it is ovbisouly effective becuase people are logging on and doing the purpose of the site.

What do you think is the motivation behind it?
gives the chance for people to be creative and seen.
Connect with band.

Name three advantages and disadvantages of a crowd sourcing?

What is crowdfunding?
(crowd financing or crowd sourced capital) collective cooperation attention and trust by people who network and pool their money

Crowdsourcing

1. What is Jeff Howe's definition of crowd sourcing?
Crowdsourcing is the act of taking a job traditionally perofrmed by an employee and outsorcing it to an undefined, generally large  group of people  in the form of an open call.

What does this video believe is the key to successful crowdsourcing?
Manage focused crowds by;
1- Build and unify a crowd of tip top freelancers.
2-Give them a web platform.
3-Manage and market the crowd.
4-Take on Goliath!

2. Why do "crowds" form on the internet?
Crowds are formed when people get together through shared interest to form a community.

What are the crucial terms in Jeff howe's idea of crowdsourcing? why are these crucial?
Open call and undefined, there is no single target audience when an open call is made, the call is made to everyone and anyone who wants to respond can respond.
open call is crucial to get lots of sources, no all are reliable but all offer opinions and views.

Name two reasons why crowd sourcing is now possible?
The internet provides communities with a platform to communicate with each other through, also the internet does not just let local people communicate but crowds are now able to communicate with any other person with an internet connection.
Advertising now plays a strong role in business and the internet, adverts can be used to make open calls which can now reach any person.

3.
Swarm sketch
This is an online webpage which uses people visiting the website to draw pictures, the picture topic changes after 1 week or when 1000 lines are drawn. Visitors to the website get to vote on the opacity of the lines which is shown to you, this makes the picture more of a group effort. SwarmSketch was developed by Peter Edmunds as part of an honours project at the University of Canberra.
Not very effective as there isn't that many hits and the theory behind the website has a small audience that it would appeal to.
The motivation behind this website would probably be artistic and the ideal of creating a picture as a community, with a fair opportunity for opinions on it's creation.

Linking park: featuring you
The task of this competition was to remix Linkin Park's song "The catalyst," The open call was made online which meant it was open to everyone willing to enter their remix.

Crowdsourcing

What is Jeff Howe's definition of crowd-sourcing?
Crowd-sourcing is the act of taking a job traditionally performed by a designated employee and outsourcing it to an undefined, generally large group of people in the form of an open call.

What does the video believe is the key to successful crowd-sourcing?

1. Build and unify a crowd of tip top feelancers.
2. Give them a web platform.
3. Manage and market the crowd.
4. Take on Goliath!.

Why do crowds form on the internet? Are you part of an online crowd - if so which?
To allow people to get together and share information, yes Facebook.

What are the crucial terms in Jeff Howes' idea of crowdsourcing? Why are these crucial?
Open Call, Undefined. Because who you think would be the best for the job, may not be the best to do it.

2 reasons Crowd-sourcing is possible?
Cheap camera's and internet access.

Swarmsketch - there is a picture and everyone adds lines to it to form a picture this is quite effective as it generates views and traffic of the website.
The motivation behind this is probably artistic and creative thinking.

Crowd sourcing

"Crowd sourcing is the act of taking a job traditionally performed by a designated employee and outsourcing it to an undefined, generally large group of people in the form of an open call." - Jeff Howe

What does this video believe is the key to successful crowd sourcing?

The video believes the key to successful crowd sourcing is managed focused crowds.

Why do 'crowds' form on the internet? Are you part of an online crowd if so which?

Crowds form on the internet due to similar interests and skills. We are part of an online crowd which is Tumblr, Polyvore and facebook.

What are the crucial terms in Jeff Howe's idea of crowdsourcing? Why are these crucial?

Open call and undefined, these are crucial because nobody knows what type of person will do your job best.

Two reasons why this type of crowdsourcing is now possible:
1) Because the technology has now advanced so far that it is easy to crowdsource
2) Because of the sheer amount of people on the internet it has now become easier to find more skilled people

Swarmsketch

The crowdsourcing project works by having each person draw one line and alter the opacity of other people's lines.

How effective do you believe it to be?
On some images it works and on others it doesn't because others have different ideas of how they want the picture to turn  out like and its hard to envision that with just drawing one line.

What do you think was the motivation behind using crowdsourcing for this project?
We think creativity and being artistic was the motivation behind using crowdsourcing, this is because it combines lots of different people's imagination and vision to create something unique.

Media in the Online Age

1.    How have online media developed?

online media has developed to offer more variety to the consumer over the years. For example, there only used to be one search engine (Google) where as now there is many more (bing, ask jeeves) and this provides the audience more choice.

2.    What has been the impact of the internet on Television?

The internet has allowed audiences to watch t.v anytime anyplace due to channels such as channel 4 and BBC creating there own websites showing programmes.  The internet also has many illegal sites that show programmes. This can have harm as people can watch shows which aren't released yet. The internet allows audiences to become more attached to there shows and characters due to there websites with exclusive information and games, equally it could be devestating for a show if people are negative about it on social sites as word travels fast.

Research on Imdb and Little Miss Sunshine/ Misfits

1) 171 user reviews and 240 critic reviews for An Education.

2) Yes because there is such a variety of opinions from both critics and independent users, so you can get a professional view of the film or a person just saying what they thought of it.

Little Miss Sunshine
On the website you can find out about more behind the scenes information then on the Misfits such as how the cast were dealing with having two directors and other things like video podcasts.
There are some some weird links on the website as well like a link to an Ebay page for camper vans.
It is not very easy to use though and there isn't much useful information about the actual film.

Misfits
We can learn all about the characters and the back story there is also an online comic depicting the first episode. There are episode guides with pictures re caping on all the episodes and many other things like music video and games.
There are 5 different links to social networking sites including Facebook and Digg.
You can take quizzes and some other stuff and log on and interact with the Misfits.
It is fairly easy to use and is accessible to everybody as it is part of the channel 4 website 4oD.

What information can we learn about the film and actors from this website?
You get to learn about each individual and their acting history by clicking on the silhouettes of the characters at the bottom.

Is the website interactive for the consumer and what way?/Which marketing strategies are evident on this website.

There are lots of links at the bottom which aren't about the film directly, but are about things shown within the film for example "customize your own VW van" and "customize your own converse". It also links to other pages to do with the film, i.e connecting to Myspace.com. The pictures on the website make the viewer interact because they are links to other pages with-in the website.

Why do you think these methods are being used for this film?
The makers of the film, want to draw in more audience, naturally, people watching the film will subconsciously be attracted to for instance the VW van, so they're just collecting more.

Misfits.

What types of information can we learn about the show, characters and actors?
You learn about all the characters individually by clicking on our misfits.

How many links are there with other forms of social media e.g facebook?
It has links to facebook and Twitter but it also links to other young teen programms such as Skins.

You can post comments about the show or the characters on the website and you can play 'wicked' games.

Is the website easy to use and accessible for all?
Everyone can access the website (as long as they have the internet of course)

Research into wider marketing strategies on the web as well as the website is there a buzz being created for the show?
On Twitter the main character's tweeted about themselves which helped getting an audience. They also created a direct to you tube video clips. And a tv promo advert and a limited edition graphic novel about the show was release to university campuses. In addition to this there was adverts in magazines and newspapers.

Why do you think these methods are being used for this film?
  • because it reflects the fun and randomness of the film by having brigh coloured and random advertising
  • Because it was a low budge film, they dont need to make everything look all fancy, so they carry on with the themes of the movie

Marketing and the internet

Little Miss Sunshine
1) What types of information can we learn about the film and the actors from this website?
This gives us soo much information about practically all the aspects of the film and the actors film histories. There are different pages for each actor alongside information about the film itself. There are pages on Production, the film directors, the storyline, downloads and how to get only extras for example on myspace and your mobile.

2) Is the website interactive for the consumer and in what ways?
The whole site is interactive as to gain information you have to explore the site by choosing different figures that lead you to a different page and different information about the film. Each page also comes with a mini clip of the film so if you do not want to read the information you can be entertained by the clips of the film, this may make you more likely to go and see the film if the clips appeal to you favourite style of films.

 3) Which marketing strategies are evident on this website?
The marketing strategies are evident on the website because there are lots of links to things you can buy such as the soundtrack on itunes, the website makes it clear that there are lots of things the consumer can buy that link to the film such as links to one of the actors bands, where to get a VW van similar to one in the film, and links to the YouTube community.

4)Why do you think these methods are being used for this film?
We think these methods are being used for this film because as the film is a non-mainstream film, the fact that it has a website and has so many links to things related to the film it makes it less of a Niche film and more accessible. The mass use of information also helps this film as people are more likely to become interested as all the info is in one place, you don't have to go around hunting to see more about the film. This also links with the actors pages, if you are a fan of a certain actor then you are more likely to go and see the film.

Misfits
1) What types of information can we learn about the show, characters and actors?
We actually learn alot about the characters via a character page specifically for said character, this includes a paragraph about their personality, the power and their general life. But we found out very little about the actual actors, their names were on their character page but there was nothing about what they have done or what else they have been in admittedly they do have episode guides that answer a few questions about what is going on.
We can find out about the first series via a web page but there is nothing for any of the series after so it means that you have to go hunting the internet to see what is/has happened.

2) How many links are there with other forms of social media e.g Facebook?
They are linked to: Facebook, Twitter, they have blog, videos, music links and online games.

3) Is the website interactive in any other ways?
The website is interactive in the ways that there are online games as well as having quizzes about the show/characters.

4)Is the website easy to use and accessible to all?
In some ways the website is easy to use because of the drop down menu and the way everything is named, but on the other hand the pure substance of information is overwhelming, along with the apparent need of adding links, videos and other websites such as Facebook.

5)Research into wider maketing strategies on the web as well as the website; is there a buzz being created for the show?
The maketing strategies used were viral marketing due to how the show has set up Twitter and Facebook pages for the characters and even if you don't watch the tv programme it is hard to escape it.

Marketing and the Internet

1. From the website you can find a detailed version of the films storyline and also you can also find information on each page about a different actor like Steve Carrel and the other 5. The website is interactive for the consumer as it allows you to download certain things, watch the trailer, look up on the characters and a lot more. The website uses a lot of marketing strategies like telling the consumer where they can watch the film and also gives a trailer to show them how good the film is. It has a link to a review site called Rottentomatoes.com where the film is rated 7.7/10 and these methods are being used for this film because they help to make people see that the film is good due to a review site and good trailer backing this up and shows where they can watch it so it pretty much is  a website that is selling the film to the consumers.

2. From the Misfits website  you can find a brief overview of the storyline but you can also find detailed infromation on the individual episodes plus you can watch all of the episodes via the website. Also you can find out information about each character and you can follow them on twitter or facebook. There are lots of links to the characters own facebook and twitter which anyone can follow and find more info about the programme and characters. You can do a lot more on the website like play online games featuring misfits characters and writing on a blog with other misfits fans. The website is very easy to use and very simple because it is desinged for young teenagers.

Little Miss Sunshine + Misfits

1.
On the website we can learn about the recent awards the film has won as well as reading reviews and accessing the twitter and facebook website for the film.

The website is interactive for the consumer because you can click a link that allows  you to get mobile downloads. There are external links to customize your on VW bus and converse shoes.

The website offers marketing strategies by providing downloads and alternative websites such as myspace.

I think these methods of marketing are used because the film is independent and it is trying to branch out to a wider audience.

2.
On this website you can learn a short summary about each individual character.  There are also summaries about the episodes.

There are various different links to social networking sites like twitter, facebook.

The website offers games featuring the misfits characters, quizzes, online comic, music playlists.

The website is simpler than the other website and easy to use.

marketing and the internet

We can watch the trailer for the film on the website.

Little Miss Sunshine Case Study

What types of information can we learn about the film actors from this website?
You can learn much about the actors in this website such as what awards or what they are nominated for from this film and other films. Also you get a bit of background information for the actor and previous productions they have been in as well as future productions which are up and coming.

You can find a full prologue of events coming up to where the film starts as well as it introducing the characters and how they know each other, you also can find corporate details about the production and the producers.

Is the website interactive for the consumer and in what ways?
The entire website is interactive, to view the actor profiles you click on a different tab which gives you information about the area you are looking at as well as the character being displayed. When you click on a tab a video pops up which is a random clip from the film which is basically drip feeding you interesting bits of the film. When you click on a link it doesn't just take you to a new page it animates its way to is, the screen is constantly moving, urging you to read more.

Which marketing stratergies are evident on this website?
The website is a marketing strategy in itself as it is promoting the film and carries a lot of information about the characters and production. Each page you go on drip feeds you with another clip form the film showing an interesting part of the film but not in full so it makes you wanting to watch the whole thing.
The characters appeal to certain types of people which make certain groups of people like different characters.

Why do you think these methods are being used for this film?
The methods use are there to hype the film up, as it is a small production this is needed to get the film heard about. This type of marketing is free and is growing as the internet gets bigger.

Misfits (e4 website)
1) What types of information can we learn about the show, characters and actors?
You can find information on the Misfits characters by clicking on the "our Misfits" tab, this sends you to the character page where you get a brief description of the characters, from there you can click read more and get more character information, you cannot find actor information on this website. There are twitter links down the left side of the page to go to the characters twitter pages, the twitter pages are from the actors not from the perspective of the characters.
You can find informtion on the show on the "about the show" tab which gives you a brief blurb of what to expect from the programme, there are also links and videos at the bottom of the page so you can watch clips of the show or catch up on whole episodes.

2) How many links are there with other forms of social media e.g Facebook?
There are 7 links 2 for facebook 5 for twitter.

Exhibition and Distribution of Youtube

1) Yes i have used Youtube, I use it to listen to music, I use Youtube instead of more conventional methods because the music that i listen to isn't available anywhere else.

2) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h5aSa4tmVNM
It's popular because it's recent news and involves a celebrity being a bit mental, it cannot be commented on because it was uploaded by a Tv station ABC news. 7 million people have watched it and almost 2000 likes.

3) Again the Charlie Sheen videos there is a lot of information both from him and from various news companies. Yes i think the information is reliable because we get most of it from Charlie Sheen himself talking in an extensive interview.

4) It is making it really easy to become a celebrity as it seems that anybody can be a celebrity, also celebrities can be exploited all over youtube especially if there are videos of them doing something they shouldn't. Anyone can post anything about them on their own accounts voicing their opinions.

5) Yes, I think that Youtube has allowed many social groups to get some sort of recognition as anybody is allowed to upload videos of pretty much anything they want also because of that people who would have never had access or any knowledge of a particular social group can see 1000's of video on any one subject.

6) People go to Youtube to express themselves because it has the biggest audience for them to show their videos to, plus it is free and not very difficult to upload videos either.

7) I think that Charlie Mcdonnel is very popular because he is quite funny while appealing to all audiences (basiclly doesn't swear). His videos are very well edited, so like Olga Kay said having urms and thinking time ruins a video, his videos are quick and calculated therefore stay interesting. Also he does some quite inpressive editing like in the video where he does a duet with himself.

YouTube

Have you ever used YouTube? If so what for and why did you use this rather than a more conventional form of media
We have both used YouTube, for watching music videos, movie trailers, Television, and random videos. This gave us all the medias we want in one easy place to view them, there is no time limit and we don't have to be in for say 6 to watch our favorite programme. More conventional forms of media i.e television means that we would miss our show if we were not at home in time for 6.

We think this is popular because the topic it covers is highly mediated at the present moment (terrorism) but it is covered in such a way that is funny without majorly offending anyone.

Think of a recent celebrity news story, can you find information about this on YouTube? Do you think this information is reliable?

A recent celebrity news story we chose is Charlie Sheen, we found out that he went on on a drug fueled rampage, and the media is portraying him as being mentally unstable. We found a lot of information about what was going on currently from YouTube via news interviews alongside these interviews selections of his work were also available for us to see at the same time.
Some of this information is reliable as it comes straight from real interviews but some of these videos are taken out of context so they portray him in the wrong light.

How do you think YouTube is affecting celebrity culture?

I believe that having so much acess to what celebrities are up to meens that some celebs are making their home lives more public via the Internet. This use of the Internet in effect is to try and create more public support for their jobs or relationships but it also has a down side for some. It make it harder for celebs to stay under the radar as anything and everything is posted on YouTube for the world to see.

Do you think YouTube allows many social groups to be represented?

YouTube in my opinion is the place where practically all social groups can co-exist, it is just up to individuals within that group to upload videos. It gives everyonene the oppurtunity to express themselves freely, admittedly some of the 'older social groups' will be less represented due to the fact that they are not seen as the online generation.

Why do you think people turn to YouTube to express themselves?

Of course people use YouTube to express themselves. It can be seen as a place where anything goes so you can express youselve in anyway possible. There is no physical barrier to pass through so it makes it easier to say exactally what you feel as you are uploading it into cyber-space not saying it to an actual person.

Have a look at Charlie Mcdonnel on YouTube, why do you think he has become so popular?

He is randomly interesting, his videos are short and entertaining.
Lauren: I have used youtube to listen to music and for educational purposes. I use it because it is free and easily accessible.

Will: Yes, I use Youtube daily for most things, I use it to listen to music, to watch films trailers, film reviews, entertainment such as funny videos and user created series such as "Smosh". The reason i use Youtube is because its free and easily available. It means i can stream music and videos rather than spending ages downloading and also it is all in one place.

This is a video of Charlie Sheen made by a user, making his interviews into a song. This has made him more famous and more comical, audiences are already interested in the craziness he has to say already and this just helps improve the entertaining aspect of it.

Youtube Questions

Have you ever used YouTube? if so what for and why did you use this rather than a more conventional form of media?
We have used youtube to watch music videos and listen to music video, the reason we have used this form of media is because it is easily accessible and you can watch it when you want. Also we use youtube to watch films, it is free and you can watch it when ever so this is why we use it. We also use youtube to watch funny and entertaining videos that we hear about by word of mouth.

Look at one of the most viewed videos on YouTube today, why do you think it is so popular? How many people have watched it / like it / commmented on it?
Cat jumps over baby gate is th video we have chosen to write about.

This video has had 944,348 views,1,194 like and 38 dislikes and 791 comments. We think people watch this video because it is funny, people find animals doing silly things amusing.

Youtube

1.

I have used youtube, i went on it to watch funny videos that i could not watch on demand through conventional forms of media like television. I also used it to watch music that i have heard on television that i could not repeat on it so i went on youtube and searched the video then kept watching it.

2.

One of the most popular videos on youtube is 'Evolution Of Dance' and this is so popular because it was put on youtube at an early time, half a year after youtube was made which meant people would have had more chance coming across the video. Also the video is funny which is one of the main things people look for and due to it being popular it would stand out to other videos which would attract people to watch it. The video has 167,000,000 views which would of also got that much by word of mouth too.

3.

A recent celebrity story is to do with actor Charlie Sheen and you can search his name and get lots of videos of him focusing on how he is going crazy like videos of interviews where he has freaked out.

4.

Youtube is affecting celebrity culture by focusing on current celebrities and picking out the bad points of them and making videos which attract people to watch it. Also youtube makes its own celebrities by videos making millions of views.

5.

Youtube allows social groups to be represented by having videos aimed directly at different social groups like funny videos aimed at teenagers.

Youtube Questions

1. Have you ever used YouTube? If so what for and why did you use this rather than a more conventional form of media?
Entertainment, tutorials, learning, how to fix it.
I use youtube to check out what cars are hot at the moment and for reviews on new cars, i also use youtube to see what car parts are like, looking from a performance and entertainment point of view, for example how loud is this exhaust how does this part change performance in my car.
Alot of the time i watch youtube to watch something funny which some one has told me about or shown me on their computer.
My band uses youtube to post our songs and to get our name out so that soon we can play gigs and have lots of people turnup and get famous. we also use youtube to watch other bands music videos to see what kind of music they are playing.
My car is unreliable and sometimes and i need to fix it , youtube has many handy tutorials which show you step by step how to fix cars, appliances and other things. there is a tutorial for how to fix most things in the world.

2. Look at one of the most viewed videos on YouTube today, why do you think it is so popular? How many people have watched it/like it/commented on it?
The two most watch videos today

The first is of the tsunami crisis in japan, this is the most recent natural disaster. This is popular because people are curious to know what happened and what damage the disaster has caused.
The second video is a black ops gaming video which is could be very popular because there a large online community of players. games are addictive. and the size of the community is growing and some are getting more and more into the game and tyring to find ways of beating each other better and quicker.

3. Think of a recent celebrity news story, can you find information about this on youtube? Do you think this information is reliable?

 Charlie Sheen Drug story.
Charlie Sheen was rushed to hospital after drug fueled night.
Interview about previous drug use and affects he had on him, how he managed to survive whilst crasking "7gramm rocks"
"cant is the cancer of happen" charlie sheen
Chalie Sheen loves to party how ever he has the motivation to do and stop doing what he wants to do.
Not ashamed to admit drugs were good and he enjoyed being on drugs.

4. How do you think Youtube is affection celebrity culture?
Higher exposure to celeb cultre nd what celebrities do because all can be seen at the click of a button.

5. Do you think YouTube allows many social groups to be represented?

6. Why do you think people turn to youtube to express themselves?

7. Have a look at Charlie Mcdonnel on Youtube, why do you think he has become so popular?

Youtube

1. Yes, I used it to watch football highlights the morning after a game that I missed. I used Youtube as it wasn't scheduled, free and easily accessible.

2. Justin beibers song, Baby, has 478 million views. Its so popular as Justin already has a huge fan base developed from youtube. He has over a million dislikes , this shows many people will sit through it just to add a comment of dislike, although he is getting attention its negative just as much positive.

3.A recent news story is the Royal wedding. I found a video on Youtube claiming that it was all set up from the start and that Kate Middleton's mother had planned for Kate to marry Will. I don't believe that this is a reliable source as her words could have been twisted and there is no evidence that she actually said these things.

4. Youtube is affecting celebrity culture as its a platform to gossip about them , share news stories about the latest scandal much like heat magazine. It also allows celebrity to get there own message across and share there music e.t.c. It allows them to target there fans in a wide scale. This could have positive effects on a celebrity but equally negative effects due to there image being unpopular.

5. Yes I do believe Youtube allows many social groups to be represented. This is because it has such a wide range of videos that are accessible. However, with the 18 or under age barrier for certain videos, this can block the different social groups.

6. People turn to youtube to express them selves as youtube is a platform in which your videos could potentially be heard by millions of people. This could benefit you in your career or just allow you to express your self in film making or weird and quirky videos.

7. Because it is so random and different to what people are used to.

News - japan earthquake/tsunami

Our focus is on the tsunami in Japan, we researched facts and figures from BBC,Sky and CNN to decide whether the information they produce is biased or not. BBC news uses exactly the same figures as Sky for estimated numbers dead which were "Police say 200 to 300 bodies have been found in the port city of Sendai."   This shows that the information that they are using is from the same source because it is a global disaster so shows that it is biased information. However CNN america does report on some different and more detailed information than BBC and Sky which is good because it means not all the news sources are biased and from the same source and gives the viewers a wider interpretation of whats happening. You can tell that all the news company's have a lot of pressure in giving the news as soon as they can due to all three channels having a live feed of the disaster that is currently happening which shows how the dominance of global news organisations is a very good thing as they assert the news very quickly.

Globalisation and the News

Is the Dominance of a few global news organisations a good thing or a bad thing?
On a whole we reckon that only having a few global news organisations is a bad thing because the news coalitions are between countries that will not badmouth each other.

How is the information being presented and why?
The British news organisations

Do you think it is bias information?
We think that as the major news stations are mainly from first world countries that they are bound to have a bias view on the news. For example, looking at CNN, Sky and BBC news they only give a one sided view.... 'This is the biggest Tsunami to hit Japan ever!....' To start with we are only given the raw scientific facts we have no real opinions.  In addition to this, reading CNN they seem to make it more light hearted, Twitter use skyrocketed, with tweets coming out of Tokyo topping 1200 per minute, according to Tweet-o-Meter, a traffic-monitoring system at University College of London.
Joanne Yates
Christopher Jefferies was arrested with suspicion of murdering 25 year old Joanna Yates. The media portrayed him as a weird eccentric. The sun wrote "JOANNA Yeates murder suspect Chris Jefferies was last night branded a creepy oddball by ex-pupils, a teaching colleague and neighbours." The public then tend to believe what they read and small things about the suspect such as his blue rinse hairstyle help to create a creepy image that make people even more suspicious of him because he is different.  They arrested Jefferies just 24hours after he said he had seen her the day she was last seen alive. This automatically reaches the news. After nine weeks on bail Jefferies was released with no involvement in Joanna Yates' death.

is the dominance of a few global news organisations a good thing or bad.

1. i think this is a bad thing as it will encourage companies to try and make their stories stand out and it may begin to become inaccurate and try and make up rumours to make their stories sell and get publicity. Smaller companies will have no publicity as the bigger companies get all the footage. An example of this was the frantic sale of Fernando Torres to Chelsea on transfer deadline day, in which sky and the bbc were the front runners in finding out informations and only after they brought news would other companies have a say and be able to broadcast. the bigger companies had different stories for example sky said he was not at training with liverpool and on his way to london where as BBC showed him coming into training early.

2. information is portrayed differently. for example the Torres deal, sky had two men, one at Liverpool and one at Chelsea reporting on any breaking news, where as in the studio people were ringing around for any kind of information to broadcast. BBC updated their website regularly with any information obtained. Twitter was also used as famous people would post what's happening for example Liverpool players or friends of Torres etc and these were then re tweeted.

3. yes, some stories are made biased on purpose to get ratings, like sky made up rumours about Torres leaving etc. this made more people tune into the station. this is more so in national stations. like lybia tv will say that rebels are wrong and negligent.

http://tweetmeme.com/story/4298652413/denmark-and-sweden-to-replace-stamps-with-text-messages

How is the Information presented and why?

The Daily Mail, seem to have copied the exact same story as the BBC and even quoted it..

"According to the BBC, a code number will cost 92p - the standard rate for a letter - plus the cost of the text message."

The BBC present the information, in detail it's not biased at all due to the simplicity of the story.
The Daily Mail could have presented the story as biased since it has taken the information from the BBC, and it is not 1st hand information.

'Arctic Startup' gives less information about the facts, but more about the results of the story.

Is the dominance of a few Global news organizations a good thing or a bad thing?

The BBC and The Daily Mail are the Global news organizations here. Arctic Startup is a Finnish news broadcasting website. It is less well known, and has less influence. However, the BBC has so much influence that it has even influenced another global organization; The Daily Mail.
However, if we only had lesser-known news broadcasters, the quality of the news would be less scrutinized, as there are more news broadcasters to choose from. Having a few big broadcasters means more specified scrutiny, meaning better quality and more reliable news after time.

Questions on Globalisation

Is the dominance of a few news organisations a good thing or bad thing?

1. I believe this to be a bad thing as too many organisations could cause a mix up and confusion in the information provided to the public. This is because they are all getting different information and this can be portrayed in different ways through too many organisations. An example of this is the Andy Carroll signing. All the different news stations came up with different stories of how much he was allegedly being signed for and this confuses the audience and gives them less accurate stories.

2. How is the information being presented and why?

The information is provided in many different ways using the latest technologies. An example of this is the Royal wedding. The coverage of this wedding and its news will be broadcast using many different technologies. For example, television news stations, newspapers and internet. This is done so they can cover as many different audience types as possible. For example, people less fortunate may not be able to access a computer or television but they could still read about it in a newspaper/magazine.

3. Do you think it's a biased view?

I believe that it is biased. For example, with the Royal wedding the BBC portray it in a positive way as they have links with the government and the government are close to the Royal's. This can mean that they are publishing false stories just because they feel they have to portray the wedding in a positive manner and therefore this makes it biased.
1. What is the Long Tail?

The Long Tail, in a nutshell

* The theory of the Long Tail is that our culture and economy is increasingly shifting away from a focus on a relatively small number of "hits" at the head of the demand curve and toward a huge number of niches in the tail

*The Long Tail was first stated by Chris Anderson in an October 2004 in Wired magazine article. He mentioned Amazon.com and Netflix as examples of businesses applying this strategy.

*As the costs of production and distribution fall, especially online, there is now less need to lump products and consumers into one-size-fits-all containers.

*In an era without the constraints of physical shelf space and other bottlenecks of distribution, narrowly-targeted goods and services can be as economically attractive as mainstream fare.

*One example of this is the theory's prediction that demand for products not available in traditional bricks and mortar stores is potentially as big as for those that are. But the same is true for video not available on broadcast TV on any given day, and songs not played on radio. In other words, the potential aggregate size of the many small markets in goods that don't individually sell well enough for traditional retail and broadcast distribution may someday rival that of the existing large market in goods that do cross that economic bar.

*The term refers specifically to the orange part of the sales chart above, which shows a standard demand curve that could apply to any industry, from entertainment to hard goods. The vertical axis is sales; the horizontal is products. The red part of the curve is the hits, which have dominated our markets and culture for most of the last century. The orange part is the non-hits, or niches, which is where the new growth is coming from now and in the future.

The Long Tail

Chris Anderson says that businesses originally thought that the release of a product for example a movie or a song was when it sold the most copies and is at its most popular. This was before the internet when there was limited storage in shops such as Wall - Mart so consumers could only access what was deemed as profitable or new and popular. But now because of the infinite storage capacity of the internet every single movie and song no matter how niche it is can be accessed because there is very little risk of keeping it available on the internet compared with actual shops. This has changed how companies will produce their product as the release of the product is no longer the most profitable period, it is now the steady constant small demand afterward which is the most profitable as it is accessible 24/7, in many different forms.

Niche film - Clerks, Kevin Smith, 1994
Production costs - 27, 000
Cinema screens - It played on less than 100 screens
How much it has made - $3 million just in the USA

Blockbuster film - Die Hard, John McTiernan, 1988

The Long Tail theory- Chris Anderson

Link to video

Chris Anderson looks into how the distribution industry is cutting the niche industry short, and how stores are becoming replaceable due to the increase in popularity from online stores such as Amazon and Itunes.

Due to the amount of films being made yearly, there is not enough space or time for them to all be shown in media complexes such as Cineworld. This then leads to the distribution channels deciding what they believe will be the "Big Hits." Thus making the niche market lose out to big films and start to become unattainable to the mass public.

However, due to the increase of the internet channels and shelf space, niche films can now be more widely accessed. This can be shown via the online music industry as for example, Rhapsody holds approximately 1.5 million tracks whereas a conventional retail store such as Walmart can only hold around 25,000. This benefits the niche market as 40% of the Rhapsody infantry is not available in traditional stores due to lack of space in mainstream stores, for the niche market.

As the internet channels and shelf space are increasing this helps the niche market to expand and grow. The above diagram reveals the extent in which the distribution market is missing out of the niche industry and potential profit, this is shown by the shaded pink area. Before the niche industry grew the distribution market could afford to ignore and look over the niche market as they saw it as not profitable, however due the growth of shelf space, there is now a market for niche products.

We believe that the mainstream products become such big hits, for the mass public, in comparison to niche products is down to lack of advertising and funding. For example, when a film directed by a proclaimed director or producer and has a large amount of funding plus proclaimed actors, the distribution market pushes advertising and will try to get as much profit out of them by promoting the films a lot more than they will promote thought provoking and interesting low budget niche films.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1
Production cost - reported as $250 million (+ $150 million in marketing)
Cinema screening - midnight showing played in 3,700 theaters (U.S alone), widest release - 4,125 theatres
Ticket sales - $24 million from the U.S. and Canada midnight showing alone
DVD sales - ?

These figures agree with Chris Andersons theory.

Long Tail Theory

The long tail theory suggests that we once believed that when a product was released this was when it made the most profit.  However we have realised that now products are still making money because of the internet.

Henry Jenkins

Henry Jenkins made a few good points throughout the clip, which were:

Teenagers demand convergence, when they want it, where they want it and how they want it. Companies try and keep up with this demand.
we put all our intelligence together to build and archive
The Internet enables us to expand our knowledge world wide

Media can change representations and the people perceptions of people ad cultures

consumers adapt technology to own needs

Henry Jenkins

The points that Henry was making were:

Teenagers and younger generations demand that they can have access to all media whenever they want, so companies are trying to converge technology as much as possible to keep up with their demands. This means that the consumers shape how we receive media rather then the companies that produce them.

He believes that collective intelligence is a very powerful asset that allows anyone to gain information about any subject however at the moment we must question the reliability of the source as collective intelligence is a process therefore it will always be changing as peoples opinions develop. Unlike encyclopedias which have been put together by just a few professional opinions making it a product rather then a process this means that the information is more reliable but not as vast as all the information avalible on the internet. Henry says that nobody knows everything but everybody knows something no matter how niche it is, it helps expand our collective intelligence. It allows people to learn about things that they may never have thought about or had access to.

Henry says that media is everywhere in our lives in is unavoidable to the most obvious step is to embrace it and learn to use it to our advantage. He says that to the younger generations it has become 2nd nature to apply everyday uses to technology such as social networking like Twitter so they can communicate in real life and online simultaneously.

He concludes that as the younger generations grow up and accept more responsibilities there will be more legitimate applications for technology and online medias used in everyday life.

Theorist-Henry Jenkins

  • media is shaped by teenage needs
  • media is behind social + cultural advancements - but it sees what is needed and adapt accordingly
  • constant drive for technological improvements
  • Collective intelligence - everyone knows something- everything is pooled together to create the information --> Wikipedia is a process, the information is pooled and is constantly being changed/refined, so the question is not 'Is Wikipedia reliable?' but 'When will the process finish?'
  • in the future collective intelligence will reap in rewards as it gets better
  • we are combined with media--> our relationship is second nature for the younger generation as we have been brought up with media surrounding us (it is leaving the older generation behind) - media technologies will continue to grow!!
What do you think has been the biggest advancement in technology in your generation? Why?

The biggest advancement in technology in my generation is the advancement of the internet. The internet has gone from being primitive is its programming, processes, and speed to the fast almost instantaneous (most of the time) way that the masses gain their information. The use of the internet has increased dramatically due to the new networks that are about. These networks such as the social networks like Facebook are changing the way that the younger generation communicate not only locally but internationally as well. These social networks were introduced via the internet due to the teenage demand of instant gratification, we as a generation are impatient in the way that we want the information that we need now, not having to search through books or other resources. The internet give us this information all in one place, i.e Google.
Another advancement in the internet is the ability to download pretty much anything we want, we can also watch whatever we want at any given time due the the creation of programmes such as iTunes and Youtube. These programmes help as they are designed with our social developments in mind. Many people now don't have the time to sit down and watch their favorite TV programme/Film but now we can watch them on the move via our phones or laptops whenever we have the time.
