What impact has the internet had on media production, distribution and exhibition?

What was the internet for?
The internet was created simply just for scientifical information to be sent quickly between scientist.

Production- Since the internet has developed, the ways in which people can collect information and ideas is much more accessible. The impact this has had on production is that people like OkGo can use crowd-sourcing to put out a advertisement as such, for ideas and help to which several people will help with they're video. This was less time consuming then trying to find people when people came to them. In addition to this, we now live in a 'partcipary culture' which means that anyone 'average Joe' can make videos on youtube and become popular and even make a living out of it. For example, Charlie McDonnell started making short, comedy videos and has become very popular through people watching his youtube channel.

Distribution- Due to globalization through the internet, the western culture has reached a wider audience. The eastern world can now access american shows such as Desperate Housewives and  niche films such as 'Joan de Florette' through the internet. The impact this has on the distribution is that western messages and values are being adopted by the eastern culture. This is known as cultural homogenization.  Since 1994, when products were first being sold on the internet, the way in which people now watch and buy they're films has widened. Instead of being restricted to the selected few films on the shelf in the local supermarket or HMV, websites such as Amazon.com have supplied us with a unlimited selection of films, music and books. The wider variety means that more products for specific target audiences are available. Niche films can be found a lot easier and are much cheaper to buy.

Exhibition- Due to the advancement of the internet we can now download almost all tv shows or watch them both legally and illegally on the internet. Little Miss Sunshine was given a website for the target audience of the film. For examples, the page suggested links for VW lovers to visit ebay, or pages to customize you're own VW. for its time, the page was very advanced in interaction with it's consumers. However, now E4's webpage for Misfits has made Little Miss Sunshine look ever so basic. You can now play games, there is individual pages on the characters and you can like and follow the program on facebook and twitter promoting it to othes. This means there is a new connection between the producers and the target audience/consumers is created and becomes more interactive.
