Intro- Explain the three contemporary representations. Also, discuss that we're covering Britishness.
To what extent do you believe that contemporary representations of a particular social group mirror current attitudes towards that group?
Paragraph 1- One key scene is from the Inbetweeners. This is evident when they are shown destroying their neighbors garden with a golf club. This shows that they feel fine with disrespecting their elders and are not afraid of the sanctions that they may face if caught. A theory to back this up is Marcuse. A passive audience will watch this and view all teenagers to be like this and will interpret them to behave like this as the norm. I disagree as this is only based on a tv show and may not be based on true day to day activities.
This is contrasted in An education in which jenny is represented as respectful to her elders. We see this in the scene where she jenny arks permission from her father to whether she can see David, an older man. the seen shows the dynamic of power as there is an low angle shot of jenny's father suggesting power. This representation of teenager attitude is what we expect as an audience it would be. as an current attitudes towards teenagers of that era is that they were respectful. This ties into the fact the film was made recently but set 1950s , its a view we have of the past.
Paragraph 2 - Sexuality is something that has been changing over the past 60 years, but it has been slyly and obviously there in comedys. In 'Are you being Served' there is a key scene where one of the worker is obviously gay as his actions and manner show it, but it is never mention that he is gay. To contrast this in a modern day comedy 'the inbetweeners' the gay character is very readily spoken about and refered to as gay, bent and many other things. In one particular scene they decride him very rudely, but it is not scene as an issue.
